Rowan Tara de Freitas is a multidisciplinary artist and educator from the UK, based in Berlin.
She uses photography, film, writing and performance to create meeting points between live, recorded and observed actions, and to play with the boundaries of documentation and storytelling.
Through investigating everyday phenomena that link the personal to the political, she creates dialogues between public and private space, language and intimacy.
Often experimenting with celluloid film and hand-made photo chemistry, she brings the process out of the lab and into a collaborative and performative setting.
She has participated in three international artist residencies; TANTEO, Sound Development City and MultiMadeira.
She has collaborated with artists, musicians, sound artists, choreographers and theatre practitioners and has performed and exhibited work in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Serbia, Greece and Mexico.
The Handmade Image is a collaborative 3 stage workshop on the construction of photographic devices and home-brew developing chemistry via accessible analogue and digital tools. It aims to explain, manipulate and analyse the production of the photographic image in a playful, eco-friendly and explorative setting.
